TREKKING LAUCA BIOSPHERE RESERVE
From: $750.000
The Lauca Biosphere Reserve is part of the Tropical Andes Hotspot, one of the richest and most diverse ecological regions on Earth. It shelters unique ecosystems and species of global conservation value, with minimal human intervention. Beyond its natural wonders, the region holds a deep cultural heritage, home to the Aymara people whose ancestral traditions remain alive. With its extreme altitude and climate, Lauca represents a biogeographical and bioclimatic jewel of Chile, renowned for its avifauna diversity, high levels of endemism, and iconic landscapes.
Day 1 – Arica to Socoroma (3,090 m) | Acclimatization Journey
We begin from your hotel in Arica and head to the Azapa Valley. Here we explore the Cerro Sombrero archaeological circuit and admire the geoglyphs of La Tropilla, an ancient representation of Andean camelid caravans traveling from the highlands to the coast. Next, we visit the San Miguel de Azapa Archaeological Museum, home to the UNESCO-listed Chinchorro mummies. Gaining altitude gradually, we hike the Candelabra Cactus Trail, the Copaquilla Pukara Trail, and a section of the Qhapaq Ñan (UNESCO World Heritage since 2014). The day concludes with dinner and overnight stay in the picturesque village of Socoroma.
Day 2 – Socoroma to Salar de Surire (4,200 m) – Putre
Our morning journey takes us through the Murmuntani pass into Las Vicuñas National Reserve and onward to the Salar de Surire Natural Monument. Here we enjoy a natural bath in the Polloquere hot springs, trek along the lagoons of the salar, and observe flamingos, vizcachas, and vicuñas. Continuing through the village of Guallatire, we reach Putre for dinner and camping under the stars.
Day 3 – Putre to Lake Chungará and Parinacota (4,400 m)
From our campsite in Putre we head to the striking Las Cuevas sector before hiking the Lagunas de Chucuyo Trail and trekking around Lake Chungará and the Cotacotani Lagoons. We visit the traditional village and church of Parinacota, where we enjoy dinner and spend the night.
Day 4 – Parinacota to Suriplaza (4,800 m) – Arica
At sunrise we depart from Parinacota towards the commune of General Lagos, the northernmost point of Chile, bordering Peru. From the Suriplaza base camp, you have the option to trek the spectacular colored mountains, reaching an altitude of 5,300 m. After this unforgettable experience, we return to the city of Arica.
